Die M/V Plancius wurde im Jahr 1976 als ein ozeanographisches Forschungsschiff der holländischen königlichen Marine unter dem Namen "Hr. Ms. Tydeman" in Betrieb genommen. Im Juni 2004 wurde die "Hr. Ms. Tydeman" aus dem Verkehr genommen. Im Dezember 2006 kaufte die holländische Rederei "Oceanwide Expeditions" das Schiff. Zur Zeit wird die M/V Plancius in einer holländischen Werft komplett, nach den neusten Sicherheitsvorschriften und Bedürfnissen an ein modernes Polarexpeditionsschiff umgebaut. Ab Juni 2009 wird es in polaren Gewässern der Arktis und Antarktis für 112 Passagiere zur Verfügung stehen. Die M/V Plancius wird unter niederländischer Flagge verkehren.
